Now Really Is The Time To Buy The Coen Bros. Collection On Blu-Ray

The Coen Bros. collection is comprised of their three first features, and another of their most beloved, and best.

We have Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing and Fargo. The current price for the set is $24.99, down from $69.98, so that's under $7.50 a film instead of almost $17.50.

The first three of those were photographed by Barry Sonnenfeld before he started directing films and, really, these Blu-rays were enough for me make up my mind once and for all that he shouldn't have stopped his work as a cinematographer.

The best supplement in the set is the commentary track on Blood Simple by Kenneth Loring, the 'artistic director of Forever Young Films.'

Allegedly.

That might be the single best commentary track I've ever listened to. it's certainly among the most' imaginative.

There's one more commentary track, with cinematographer Roger Deakins talking us through Fargo. The aforementioned Barry Sonnenfeld features in a fairly good interview on the Miller's Crossing disc.

But, really, this set is about the films. Despite them featuring a few recurring plot points and generic tropes ' most notably, bungled kidnappings ' the films cover wide stylistic ground, but always with an identifiably Coensy twist.

And they're all really rather good indeed.

Importers outside of the US and Region A take note: Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing and Fargo all played on my Region B player, Blood Simple was Region A locked and I had to play it on my Region A deck.

My beloved Region A deck. Don't know what I'd do without it.
