I'm quite the fan of the Planet of the Apes series, for all of its faults. Each of the five original films has something strong going for it, and watching them all in sequence I found myself becoming pretty well invested. What's more, a nice, but trivial, side effect of knowing all of the films well was added enjoyment of the copious reference points in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
A very good opportunity to indulge in the whole run like I did has come along thanks to a decent price drop at Amazon. Right now, the complete HD collection of original Apes movies on Blu-ray is going for just $24.99, giving us a price of under $5 per film.
It's not a region free set, I'm afraid, so importers will need to have a Region A capable player.
If you're in the UK, you'd have to plump for our version of the set, currently priced at £15.49, or just over £3 per film. There's a couple of downsides: the extended version of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes from the US release is missing, with just the original, theatrical cut included; and the codec for the audio isn't quite as high a quality. Everything else matches up pretty squarely (though still streets ahead of DVD).
Many won't care about those factors, of course, but being a bit of a dweeb about these things, I went for the US edition.
I'm not a total dork, however, as I didn't go for the out of print, more expensive, more lavish, book-mounted collector's set. I'm in it for the contents of the discs mainly, but I can at least see the attraction of the book. Had the book been a separate item packaged with a shelveable set of the discs, I'd have been tempted.
