Superb: Mark Strong To Star In Dexter Fletcher's Provenance

Dexter Fletcher's directorial debut, Wild Bill, was a real 'Who knew?' moment. After years of high profile but often quite dreadful film and TV  roles ' though, of course, there were some splendid exceptions ' Fletcher stepped behind the camera and showed, right out of the gate, that he has a real flair for it.

I spoke to Fletcher and his Wild Bill stars, and if you want to learn a bit more about that film, I suggest you catch up on those interviews. One key point, though, is that, despite the contemporary setting,Wild Bill is a film styled, to some extent, after the Western. It's a genre that Fletcher obviously loves, and has a good grasp of.

So it's great news that he's going to make an 'actual' Western next.

Speaking to Jason Solomons, Fletcher has discussed his plans for Provenance, a film about Londoners trying to make their way in US frontier towns:

I tried to work a lot western ideas into Wild Bill and I feel really lucky to be able to actually get to make one of my own, in real western country.

Two roles have been cast so far: Sammy Williams, from Wild Bill and Attack the Block will have a role; and Mark Strong is going to star. Then, with Fletcher being Fletcher, we're practically guaranteed a turn from Jason Flemyng. You won't hear me complaining.

A little bit of Google-Fu reveals a reference to the film in one of Total Film's Cannes blogs. They had a quote from Fletcher saying that the film would be about:

It's a story about a young man learning to leave his past behind and go on and do great things.

Could almost be autobiographical with a through-line like that.
